The Photo Booth

Commemorate your experience with a special Photo Booth located in the Exhibit Lobby. The Museum of Emergency Medicine

Monday–Wednesday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

Explore the history of ACEP and emergency medicine in our incredible interactive museum. Tour the five decades of emergency medicine through photos, videos, stories and artifacts. Hear first-hand accounts of the fight to establish emergency medicine as a specialty from some of our 50-year members. Get a personal museum tour from our AI virtual docent Chatbot and compete in a trivia contest, all from your phone. To get started, text “Hello” to 619-272-2414.

Ribbon Cutting Celebration

This invitation-only ribbon cutting ceremony will kick off our museum. There will be special book events and opportunities to take the history home with you.

History of Military Emergency Medicine

Monday–Wednesday, 9:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
Exhibit Hall, San Diego Conference Center
The battlefield has served as a catalyst for emergency medicine as a distinct medical discipline and a crucible for refining existing medical knowledge. Government Services ACEP is proud to trace the evolution of military emergency medicine with a living walkthrough museum.

  • Step past images of the Balad trauma bay doors and the floor of Trauma Bay II, into a Navy Shock Trauma Platoon tent equipped for patient care.
  • See the evolution of portable ultrasound and experience the history of tourniquets from the Civil War up through Iraq and Afghanistan.
  • Talk to Critical Care Air Transport Team emergency physicians who care for the critically wounded through the entire evacuation chain, from point of injury back to stateside.
  • Learn about the history of battlefield medics and how their skills are being translated to civilian tactical EMS systems.
  • Attend 10-minute mini lectures on the unique history of military emergency medicine and listen to Government Services ACEP members tell stories of providing emergency care to America’s heroes.

Anniversary General Session

Monday 10–10:50 a.m.

Celebrate the 50th Anniversary with a special general session. Come listen to our extraordinary speaker, Mel Herbert, MBBS (MD) BmedSci, FACEP, who will take us on his lifelong quest for meaning. Through his remarkable tale, we will be reminded of the superhero nature of emergency medicine that lives inside each of us. Also, enjoy a short documentary celebrating emergency medicine and the physicians who practice it.

Anyone, Anything, Anytime–History of Emergency Medicine (2nd Edition)

The classic, updated with full-color photos and new interviews, the redesigned second edition of Anyone, Anything, Anytime takes an even deeper dive into the evolution of emergency medicine. With first-hand narratives from nearly 50 emergency medicine pioneers, prominent historian Brian J. Zink, MD, FACEP, explores the origins and remarkable transformation of the specialty from its early days following World War II through the sociopolitical changes of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s to the present day.

  • Rudenz (Rudy) Douthat, MD, FACEP, member since 1969, worked the emergency department shift for John Wiegenstein, MD, while went to the Holiday Inn in Lansing, Michigan, to formalize ACEP in 1968.
  • Stan Gold, MD, FACEP, member since 1970.
  • A.J. Reed, MD, member since 1969, founded Kansas chapter in 1972 and served as its first President.
  • Samuel Slimmer, MD, FACEP, member since 1968.
  • Jesse Weigel, MD, FACEP, member since 1969, member of Pennsylvania chapter since its founding in 1971.

  • Pamela P. Bensen, MD, FACEP, first woman in an emergency medicine residency, in 1971; first emergency medicine intern; and first woman elected to the ACEP Board of Directors.
  • Peter Fahrney, MD, FACEP member since 1969, first elected Council Speaker, in 1974.
  • Judith E. Tintinalli, MD, MS, FACEP, first woman to serve as program director for an emergency medicine residency program, in 1991; first woman to chair the American Board of Emergency Medicine, in 1989–1990; founding President of the Council of Emergency Residency Directors; and Editor-in-Chief of the world’s best-selling emergency medicine textbook.

NEMPAC Donor Reception

NEMPAC donors who have contributed $500 or more in 2018 ($50 or more for residents) are invited to celebrate NEMPAC’s growth and success while mingling with other donors and NEMPAC and ACEP leaders. Guests will enjoy food, beverages, and tours of the ship and museum.

ACEP18 Kickoff Party

Monday, 7–10 p.m., Gaslamp Quarter
Enjoy music, family-friendly activities, food, drinks, and the opportunity to visit many of the historic restaurants and buildings on famed Fifth Street. Extend the party after 10:00 p.m. with the best seats in the Gaslamp as the restaurants and bars open their doors to the public. All ACEP18 attendees and guests with badges are welcome. Guest badges are required for this event. You can purchase a guest pass in the ACEP18 Registration Area.
