What does your program offer that residents can’t get anywhere else?
As an established program for almost 40 years, we offer the time-tested experience of what it takes to create board-certified emergency physicians. As the state’s only Level I trauma center, children’s hospital, Level IV NICU, and organ transplant center, we are unopposed in our ability to meet the needs of our patients.
We also offer fellowships in Critical Care (medical and surgical), Medical Toxicology, Medical Education, Sports Medicine, Emergency Medical Services, and Pediatric Emergency Medicine, all accompanied by a residency fellowship track. Shifts at our community EM site, UMMC Madison, are integrated throughout the curriculum so that residents can experience a blend of community practice alongside quaternary care academic practice. We also recently opened our new OB/GYN emergency department to better serve this high-risk patient population. UMMC Jackson and Madison truly are diamonds in the rough. We offer a “Michelin star” training experience in a rather unassuming location that competes with any EM program in the country. Over the last four decades, our residents have taken their training all over the country and internationally. We are excited to share our historic legacy with the next generation of emergency physicians!
What are some fun activities that residents like to partake in, or recently have participated in?
Since the cost of living in Jackson is very attractive, our residents have the luxury of exploring all that the area has to offer. From shopping to outdoor activities to historical museums, Jackson has something for everyone. We recently hosted our annual intern welcome party at one of our attending’s houses on the Ross Barnett Reservoir, one of central Mississippi’s largest recreational areas. One of our other attendings just hosted our annual live ballistics lab, demonstrating the effects of various ballistic injuries on ballistic molds and gels. Our residents also like to frequent our local brewery, Fertile Grounds Beer Company, hit balls at Top Golf, and explore many of the local restaurants owned by James Beard culinary award finalists.
