What does your program offer that residents can’t get anywhere else?

At CAMC, we offer a truly unique training experience that prepares residents to excel in emergency medicine. Our patient population is one of the most medically complex in the country, with many individuals delaying care until they’re critically ill. This provides an unparalleled opportunity to manage severe and challenging cases on a regular basis.

With only six residents per class, our program ensures exceptional hands-on experience. This manifests itself through very high procedure numbers per resident, lots of experience managing multiple sick/crashing people simultaneously and working one-on-one with our attendings for an incredible education.

All of this occurs in an environment with a Level I trauma center where residents not only master emergency medicine but also maintain the rare skill of managing their own orthopedic reductions.

At CAMC, you won’t just learn emergency medicine—you’ll live it, in all its complexity and intensity.

What is the work-life balance like? or What are some fun activities residents like to partake in or recently participated in?

Living in West Virginia feels like every day is summer camp, with the outdoors as your playground. Whether you’re into world-class rock climbing, whitewater rafting, snow skiing, kayaking, hiking, or mountain biking, the state offers endless opportunities to explore. Thanks to its compact size, nearly every adventure is just a short drive away, making it easy to enjoy even on a single day off.

For those who prefer a different pace, Charleston is a vibrant small city with a thriving food scene, a lively downtown atmosphere, and frequent live music events. Our residents have a wide range of hobbies, from hunting (deer season brings some to the tree stand on their days off) and golfing to diving into the state’s iconic outdoor activities. And if you’re new to any of these, don’t worry—there’s always someone eager to introduce you to their favorite pastime. At CAMC, we believe in working hard and playing hard, and West Virginia is the perfect place to strike that balance.
