On April 24, 2014, the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) received approval from the American Board of Medical Specialties to begin offering certification in pain medicine. To be eligible for the pain medicine subspecialty certification examination, ABEM diplomats must:
- Complete a one-year pain medicine fellowship accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education
- Hold a valid ABEM certificate
- Adhere to ABEM policy on medical licensure, and
- Participate in the ABEM Maintenance of Certification program.
