Program Cuts PCI Readmissions by Nearly Half

The Massachusetts General team “has found a series of interventions that have led to impressive and sustained reductions in their readmission rate for this group of patients,” Dr. Eric Alper of the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester and UMass Memorial Health Care told Reuters Health in an email.

“Readmission reduction is a challenging improvement effort,” added Dr. Alper, who was not connected with the Mass General study. As the research team has shown, reducing readmissions “frequently requires multiple independent interventions in order to be effective,” he said.
