Nasal Glucagon Promising for Hypoglycemia in Young Diabetics

“Glucagon is critical for people who are experiencing severe hypoglycemic episodes. In emergency situations, not having to reconstitute and inject glucagon would reduce the complexity of an already stressful situation,” Ibsen said by email. “Nasal glucagon is a potential step forward for people with diabetes as well as for caregivers, such as parents of children with diabetes.”

Studies in children are ongoing, she noted; however, Lilly has not yet specified a launch date.

“This is going to be wonderful for our children with type 1 diabetes,” pediatric endocrinologist Dr. Douglas Rogers of Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital told Reuters Health. “We will switch to it as soon as it is available.”
