ACEP News: Vol 30 – No 11 – November 2011

The ACEP Section on International Emergency Medicine serves as a resource to other countries in their development of emergency medicine and promotes international interchange, understanding, and cooperation among physicians in the field.

With more than 1,200 members, International EM is one of the College’s largest and most active sections. Its membership is varied and consists of U.S. physicians, fellows, and residents, as well as physicians from other countries or those currently living and practicing abroad.

The section has a dynamic leadership structure that allows many opportunities for members to become involved. Section leadership is responsible for implementation of the College’s International Strategic Plan, which is approved by the ACEP Board of Directors and includes governance of ACEP’s International Ambassador Program. This program includes more than 70

Ambassadors representing as many countries/regions, as well as ACEP’s annual Scientific Assembly Scholarship Award Program.

The Section also develops and implements 4-5 hours of education each year in conjunction with Scientific Assembly.

The Section’s website incorporates “country-specific” taxonomy, which identifies related content and allows visitors to easily access information or links by their countries of interest. Newsletter articles are posted in real time, and a new discussion forum allows section members to start and join in online interaction. Soon, section members will be able to submit “Reports From the Field” for sharing experiences at international conferences, as volunteers for disaster relief or humanitarian efforts, participation in EM development efforts, and more.

More information about the International EM Section is available at www.acep.org/internationalsection.
