The Emergency Medicine Residency at The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School offers a uniquely modern, mission-driven training experience built from the ground up to prepare physicians not just to practice emergency medicine, but to lead communities and transform health systems.

As a program built in the modern era (established in 2012), our program was intentionally designed to be learner-centered, innovative, and adaptable, integrating cutting-edge educational strategies such as simulation, cadaver labs, problem-based learning, and individualized, class-specific curricula.

Clinically, the program stands out through its multi-hospital training model, exposing residents to a wide range of environments — from a high-acuity university-based urban safety-net Level I trauma center to a tertiary Level I pediatric hospital, a community-based complex cardiac referral center, and a rural critical access hospital. Training produces graduates who are confident, adaptable, and prepared to practice in any clinical setting upon graduation.

Additionally, the program emphasizes leadership development and health system innovation, with focused opportunities in EMS, public advocacy, emergency department administration, and pediatric emergency medicine.

Finally, our size—just eight residents per class—creates a close-knit, highly mentored environment with individualized attention and strong faculty engagement.

What is the work-life balance like? What do residents enjoy outside of work?

Beyond the clinical environment, there is a strong sense of community and intentional investment in resident well-being with a supportive culture, thoughtful scheduling and strong mentorship structure that allows resident to thrive both personally and professionally. Regular social events include intern welcome picnic, resident retreats, journal clubs with social hours, holiday celebrations, and graduation events—creating meaningful connections among residents and faculty.
