What Does Your Program Offer That Residents Can’t Get Anywhere Else?

Vassar Brothers Medical Center stands out as an exceptional residency training destination for several reasons. Once a community hospital, we have grown to become the Mid-Hudson region’s tertiary care center, covering a large catchment area spanning urban, suburban, and rural communities with a diverse array of medically complex presentations. This growth has allowed us to provide more extensive bedside training, along with an advanced ultrasound and simulation curriculum. Our case index population also has allowed for several of our residents to publish case reports and be accepted to National CPC competitions, simply due to the rare pathology seen on shift. We are also involved with outreach, participating with our local Board of Health and Community Health events focused on addressing health disparities, as well as incorporating Global Health opportunities into our curriculum through electives to Ghana and Peru, to name a few.

Lastly, our program distinguishes itself by its resident and faculty diversity, adaptability, and commitment to resident satisfaction and development. As an evolving residency, we prioritize responsiveness to the changing needs and preferences of our diverse residents. Supported by a dedicated Graduate Medical Education team, our program is committed to fostering the best possible environment for resident skill development and professional growth.

The combination of patient diversity, resident diversity, and a resident-centered, supportive culture makes Vassar Brothers Medical Center and Nuvance Health an outstanding place to complete a residency, where residents can truly thrive and become the best EM physicians they can be.

What Are Some Fun Activities Residents Like to Partake in or Recently Participated In?

Our Wellness Committee is dedicated to the well-being of our team, and they have organized many activities to ensure our residents have fun too! In addition to our monthly happy hours exploring local breweries, seasonally themed events are planned throughout the year, such as the annual July Kickball Tournament, the Halloween Murder Mystery, a Friendsgiving dinner, a Holiday Secret Santa, and a New Year Cultural Pot Luck! We also have an annual overnight retreat in the nearby Catskills, where all residents are excused from clinical duties and get to spend time together along with faculty mentors; this is a time for fun as well as reflection on the program and year to come.
