At Kent Hospital, our mission is to train competent, confident, and compassionate emergency physicians. One of the unique aspects of our clinical experience is a nearly 100 percent 1:1 attending-to-resident ratio while working in our emergency department. This allows each resident to have personal training from our faculty on every single shift. We also offer a wide variety of experiences outside of our hospital including rotations in shock trauma at Baltimore, Women & Infants Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, and Boston Children’s Hospital in Boston.

Outside of the hospital, we host an annual Medical Wilderness Adventure Race (MedWAR) race with our local EMS agencies in the fall to practice wilderness medicine, and many residents volunteer with the medical team at the Boston Marathon in the spring. We have robust elective experiences allowing residents to explore specific interests in emergency medicine. Examples of electives include critical access emergency care on Block Island, ski patrol in Vermont, global health in Rwanda and Madagascar, and sports medicine.

What is the work-life balance like? What are some fun activities that residents enjoy when they’re not working?

Our residents take full advantage of all the great experiences New England has to offer. In the winter, they enjoy skiing and snowboarding in the mountains of New Hampshire and Vermont. In the spring and summer, they love going to the beautiful Rhode Island beaches, sailing in Newport, or hiking on the many picturesque trails throughout the state. Rhode Island has great restaurants, breweries, and activities that everyone can enjoy all year round.
