ACEP Now: June 2026 (Digital)Hackensack University Medical Center offers a uniquely high-acuity training environment at one of the busiest emergency departments in the New York metropolitan area. As the flagship referral center for an 18-hospital network, our residents care for an extraordinarily complex patient population, from transplant recipients and oncologic emergencies to high-mechanism trauma and patients supported by advanced cardiac devices.
Beyond clinical exposure, our program emphasizes graduated autonomy, strong faculty mentorship, and a culture of intellectual curiosity. Residents train alongside fellowship-trained faculty in such areas as medical toxicology, ultrasound, critical care, EMS, and pediatric emergency medicine, while also benefiting from robust support for research, simulation, and electives abroad.
What is the work-life balance like? What are some fun activities residents enjoy when they’re not working?
Although our program offers an intense and clinically rich training environment, we strongly value community and wellness. Residents support one another through a collegial culture that emphasizes teamwork and mentorship.
Outside of the hospital, residents enjoy taking advantage of everything the region has to offer, from exploring New York City’s food scene and cultural attractions to hiking, skiing, and spending time at the New Jersey Shore. Many residents also enjoy social gatherings, group dinners, and celebrating milestones together, creating a strong sense of camaraderie both inside and outside the emergency department.
