ACEP Now: July 2026I retired from the Veteran’s Affairs (VA) emergency department in Kansas City in 2022. I have kept working some “fee basis” part-time shifts each month in Kansas City and Topeka, Kansas, in the VA emergency departments. This helps with filling holes in coverage, helping full-time physicians have time off for vacation, [their] children’s activities, and doctor’s appointments, and is a way of “giving back” to military veterans who have served.
