Alan Molk, MD, FACEPFor Alan Molk, MD, FACEP, an emergency physician in Phoenix, it was a personal tragedy that prompted him to become an author. He was in the midst of his mother’s battle with Alzheimer’s, witnessing the importance of compassionate end-of-life care. His cousin, Dr. Robert Shapiro, experienced a devastating personal loss around the same time, and the two connected over shared “awakenings about the importance of dignified end-of-life care.” They decided to write a book that would help both laypeople and clinicians navigate these challenges. Saving Lives, Saving Dignity: A Unique End of Life Perspective from Two Emergency Physicians was reissued as a second edition in early 2021 and is an Amazon best seller. “It all came from the heart,” Dr. Molk said. “I’m very passionate about this important topic that so many sweep under the rug.”
