About the Publication
ACEP Now is an official publication of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Emergency physicians rely on ACEP Now for indispensable content that can be used in daily practice. With a rapidly evolving heath care system, emergency physicians need a trustworthy source for the most valuable and insightful information that impacts the practice of Emergency Medicine. That source is the award-winning monthly membership magazine, ACEP Now. Written by physicians for physicians, each issue delivers cutting edge news, practice changing tips, regulatory updates, and the most up to date information on health care reform.
ACEP Now contains articles written by physicians, experienced medical journalists, and staff of ACEP and other emergency medicine organizations. The content is not peer reviewed in a traditional sense, although the Medical Editor in Chief (EIC), members of the publication’s editorial advisory board, and ACEP staff do review all articles.
The magazine is distributed as both a monthly print issue and online at www.ACEPNow.com, with weekly emails (ACEP eNow) highlighting print and online exclusive content sent to ACEP members. It reaches almost 40,000 emergency physicians and other health care professionals who practice emergency care.
The Medical EIC works closely with the Wiley Editor, who runs the day-to-day editorial office operations, and ACEP staff. The Medical EIC suggests ideas to keep the publication current with developments and trends in emergency medicine. Together the Medical EIC, the Wiley Editor, and ACEP staff plan the annual editorial strategy.
- Oversee the clinical and editorial content of ACEP Now and its editorial direction to ensure that the publication is relevant to those practicing emergency medicine. You provide editorial leadership and will be given deference to decisions on clinical and editorial content.
- Monthly, you will participate in an hour-long Story Call with the ACEP and Wiley staff to assist in:
- Idea generation for future print and online only articles;
- Selecting articles for you to assign to physician writers; and
- Selecting articles for the ACEP staff or for the Wiley Editor to assign to freelance medical writers and suggesting resources or sources for those articles (about 10-30% of the content of each issue).
- You will identify and solicit experts to write feature articles for ACEP Now, corresponding to 35%-45% of the content in each issue
- As needed, you will identify new columnists for ACEP Now and provide guidance to current columnists, corresponding to 35%-45% of the content in each issue
- If desired, you can write or recruit a one-page editorial column (approximately 1,000 words) on a topic of your choice to appear in every print issue of ACEP Now. Deadlines and specific details to be agreed upon with ACEP staff and the Wiley Editor.
- You will review all content for both the print issue and website for clinical accuracy and relevance to ACEP members prior to publication. You will submit your comments to ACEP staff and the Wiley Professional Editor via e-mail.
- You will coordinate the CME paperwork for one article each month in a timely and efficient manner.
- Monthly, you will participate in an hour-long Art Call with Wiley and ACEP staff to finalize the editorial lineup for the issue and discuss images for the issue.
- Each issue, you will review a PDF of the designed issue to ensure all images and supporting design elements are appropriate.
- On an as-needed basis, you will make yourself available to Wiley Editor for general opinions and advice.
- On an as-needed basis, you will support the content development process for the routine publication of original content for the ACEP Now web site and e-newsletters (approximately 8-10 articles per month) via idea generation and source identification and reviewing articles for clinical accuracy or selecting newswire articles for inclusion.
- You will maintain an editorial board of ACEP members that represents the full spectrum of the specialty and run one annual in-person and/or one annual teleconference meeting with board members. You will appoint, supervise, and utilize the editorial board by establishing specific roles, responsibilities, and/or tasks for the editorial advisory board members on a regular basis.
- Within 12 months, you will select an associate editor to work with you on the day-to-day responsibilities of ACEP Now. The associate editor will be responsible for attending story calls, editing articles as necessary, reviewing the PDF of each issue, writing two articles for ACEP Now per year, and providing backup editorial guidance to Wiley and ACEP staff as needed.
- You will attend ACEP’s Annual Meeting as a representative of ACEP Now. You will also attend the editorial board meeting held during the Annual Meeting.
- Provide verbal and written reports as appropriate on an as-needed basis to ACEP’s Board of Directors and staff.
- Review letters to the editor and provide guidance on unsolicited contributions and ideas from the general public.
- The Medical EIC is paid an annual stipend commensurate with experience.
Note: In terms of the time commitment, this equates to roughly 5–10 hours/week. More time will be spent during production weeks, normally the first and last weeks of the month.
- An emergency medicine visionary who can build on the success of ACEP Now.
- An individual known within the emergency medicine community with established contacts throughout the ACEP.
- Previous publishing experience—print or digital—preferred.
- Excellent verbal, written, and medical editing skills.
- Ability to make decisions to ensure ACEP Now meets quality editorial standards.
- Ability to work flexibly and on deadline with the Wiley Editor and ACEP staff to make editorial decisions.
- An awareness of ACEP programs, events, and products and their competitive position in the marketplace.
