ACEP Now: Vol 43 – No 07 – July 2024Dr. Terry was in Washington, D.C., at the annual House Call the Mall, on June 4. Representing ACEP members, she focused on reimbursement, Medicare and Medicaid reform, and the No Surprises Act.
On June 7, Dr. Terry spoke at the White House about firearm violence. She explained how ACEP provides a forum and works through its Council to set priorities on how best to attack various issues facing emergency physicians and the public.
Then, she was off to South Carolina, where she spoke at the Coastal Emergency Medicine Conference, the annual joint conference of ACEP’s North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia chapters. She shared an update on ACEP efforts related to boarding, violence prevention, corporatization, and consolidation.
Dr. Terry continued on June 10 at the American Medical Association’s annual meeting of its House of Delegates in Chicago. ACEP is the only EM organization with voting representation at the AMA annual meeting. Two important ACEP-led resolutions were adopted.
Resolution 709: Improvements to Patient Flow in the U.S. Healthcare System
ACEP’s testimony reinforced current ACEP efforts on boarding and hospital system overload. This resolution called for AMA to join stakeholders in ACEP-led activities to improve patient flow through the health care system.
Resolution 710: The Regulation of Private Equity in the Healthcare Sector
ACEP called on the AMA to create guidelines and advocate for regulations that preserve physician autonomy. ACEP-supported amendments broadened language to cover more entities with corporate control of medical practices.
On June 11, Dr. Terry and ACEP staff met with representatives from The Joint Commission to discuss the adoption of stronger standards for hospitals related to boarding in the emergency department.
Catch her if you can. Her next stop is in Florida for the EMS Eagles conference.
