ACEP News: Vol 32 – No 11 – November 2013The resolution that drew the most discussion on the Council floor was one asking ACEP to rescind its Clinical Policy released in February 2013 on the use of tPA for stroke management. Those in favor of the resolution questioned the clinical policy development process and expressed concern about potential litigation.
Those opposed to the resolution noted that the clinical policy had been rigorously evaluated by the writing panel and had received expert review by multiple physician organizations.
Ultimately, the Council decided to ask the ACEP Board of Directors to reconsider the clinical policy and institute a member comment period for any future clinical policies related to tPA.
Councillors also adopted a resolution that ACEP define clinical ultrasound as a diagnostic modality, that ACEP encourage palliative and hospice care consultations in the ED, and that ACEP promote and endorse the availability of a dedicated area for nursing mothers near the ED.
The Council adopted resolutions to ask ACEP to work with stakeholders to make recommendations on end-of-life issues, to support and develop a white paper about Health Information Exchanges, and that ACEP ask members to consider using AMBER alert screen savers in the ED.
Several other resolutions were also considered by this year’s Council, made up of more than 350 members. The Council represents all 53 chapters, 32 ACEP sections of membership, the Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association (EMRA), the Association of Academic Chairs in Emergency Medicine (AACEM), the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors (CORD), and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM).
The resolutions adopted by the Council do not become College policy until they are reviewed and approved by the ACEP Board of Directors.
Next year’s Council meeting will take place Oct. 25-26 in Chicago. The annual Council meeting is open to the public.
